Do As I do: 3 Quotes on Leading by Example

When one thinks of leaders and leadership, people wish to think of standards and practices that work in real time. No one likes the manager who tells you to do one thing and does the opposite. Everyone from parents to school teachers and elected officials are supposed to remind us of how we as people can be better. Religion and philosophy sets standards for better living as well. When one wishes to be a leader, the best course of action is to lead by example. Here are a few quotes that can help remind you of what it means to be a better leader both within and for others to follow.

A good example has twice the value of good advice

Albert Schweitzer

This quote is as plain as it gets. How many times has one learned more from someone demonstrating something in real time rather than simply explaining it? No one likes a hypocrite. If you’re going to lead, you need to make sure you can do something correctly. People want to do the right thing naturally, so if they see a leader who can’t lead by example, it will be hard to make them do the right thing. One demonstration of good behavior or the correct method is far better than a whole book written on the subject.

“Never separate the life you live from the words you speak.”

Paul Wellstone

What is the point of talking about something to others if you’re not going to do it yourself? Doing so actually makes your life harder because you are now tasked with doing something you may not know anything about. You will have to measure up to your own words of advice. Everyone is a big shot until they are put to the test. It is better to only speak from your lived experience on any subject. In that sense, people will know right away that if you do the things you discuss, they will respect your words due to your actions. Always assume someone is watching you when you speak.

“I challenge you to make your life a masterpiece. I challenge you to join the ranks of those people who live what they teach, who walk their talk.”

Tony Robbins

When you ask someone what they think the best kind of life is, there will be various answers. The best I can come up with on a personal level will be living a life where you can live up to your own personal values. Everyone has a personal philosophy or religion. When you live up to the type of person you would want to see in the mirror, one feels a sense of joy and accomplishment. What this quote asks of you is to try to be the type of person you would follow. Every accomplishment in your life is a chapter in your personal story. Why not make it one others would like to follow?
